She would later describe her mother as having "put all her frustrated love into me. She would later fictionalise her parent's marriage in her novel, An Act of Will. She later received a handwritten thank-you letter from Clementine Churchill , the wife of Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Barbara Taylor Bradford's biographer, Piers Dudgeon, uncovered evidence that her mother, Freda, was the illegitimate daughter of Frederick Robinson, 2nd Marquess of Ripon , a local Yorkshire aristocrat. Dudgeon informed his biographee that her grandmother had had three children by the Marquess, and after some hesitation, she allowed Dudgeon to publish the book. Although initially angry at Dudgeon's discovery, she later said that "I came round. There's no stigma now.
A celebration of an indomitable spirit, here is New York Times bestselling author Barbara Taylor Bradford's dazzling saga of a woman who dared to dream--and to triumph against all odds In the brooding moors above a humble Yorkshire village stood Fairley Hall. There, Emma Harte, its oppressed but resourceful servant girl, acquired a shrewd determination. There, she honed her skills, discovered the meaning of treachery, learned to survive, to become a woman, and vowed to make her mark on the world. In the wake of tragedy she rose from poverty to magnificent wealth as the iron-willed force behind a thriving international enterprise. As one of the richest women in the world Emma Harte has almost everything she fought so hard to achieve--save for the dream of love, and for the passion of the one man she could never have. Through two marriages, two devastating wars, and generations of secrets, Emma's unparalleled success has come with a price.

Memories of "Woman of Substance" led me to pick this one up from my mum's bookshelf, but after 50 pages I gave up. None of the characters had engaged me by then, and the plot didn't either. The lengthy and seemingly pointless detail about clothing and decor was still there though. I enjoyed the first book about Emma Harte, but this one doesn't live up to her legacy unfortunately. I don't like writing negative reviews but in this case, I'm not worrying that my humble opinion will damage BTB's sales one iota!

Currently free, just for today Amazon available to Canadians; HarperCollins appears to still have the e-book rights to this in many other places in the world when I spot-check, but YMMV and you may luck out in your locale. Because not only is it nifty to get the 1st-in-series free after having received the 2nd a few days ago, it's also a fairly major-back-in-the-day novel kicking off a popular series by a bestselling author and while it may not be to every Gentle Reader's taste, it's really nice to be getting something this retro-significant in pop-cultural terms.
