Buddhist texts pose a somewhat unique problem on top of all this: since Buddhism came to span so many cultural and linguistic barriers over such a long period of time, the diversity of Buddhist primary sources is extraordinary. Precisely because of this, they also provide an ideal testbed for a digital library - any system that is able to deal with these complex and daunting issues will have little problem dealing with the other things out there. The project described in this paper deals 'only' with one set of scriptures in this collection of canons, the Chinese Buddhist Canon that is used throughout East Asia.

Spreading from India to Central and Southeast Asia , China , Korea, and Japan , Buddhism has played a central role in the spiritual, cultural, and social life of Asia , and, beginning in the 20th century, it spread to the West. Ancient Buddhist scripture and doctrine developed in several closely related literary languages of ancient India, especially in Pali and Sanskrit. In this article Pali and Sanskrit words that have gained currency in English are treated as English words and are rendered in the form in which they appear in English-language dictionaries. Exceptions occur in special circumstances—as, for example, in the case of the Sanskrit term dharma Pali: dhamma , which has meanings that are not usually associated with the term dharma as it is often used in English. Pali forms are given in the sections on the core teachings of early Buddhism that are reconstructed primarily from Pali texts and in sections that deal with Buddhist traditions in which the primary sacred language is Pali.

Its arrangement reflects the importance that the early followers attached to the monastic life Pali and Sanskrit: Vinaya , to the discourses of the Buddha Pali: Sutta , and subsequently to the interest in scholasticism Pali: Abhidhamma. From a literary viewpoint, many of the discourses can appear to be drawn out and repetitive; however, they are characterized by sublimity of thought and employ rich, beautiful illustrative similes. The Pali version is a strictly Theravada collection and has little in common with the Abhidhamma works recognized by other Buddhist schools. The noncanonical literature of Theravada Buddhism consists, to a large extent, of commentaries on the Tipitaka texts but also includes other works. Prominent among the exponents of Buddhism who attempted to harmonize its apparently conflicting teachings and grasp the inner meaning of its doctrine were Nagasena, Buddhaghosha , Buddhadatta, and Dhammapala. The author begins with an account of his own past lives and those of King Menander because events in those lives will cause the two to meet again in this life.

The Buddha's teaching was oral. He taught for 45 years, adapting the teaching to suit the group he was addressing, and there is duplication in the texts. The language he used is understood to be Magadhi. The Sangha memorized the teachings, and there were group recitations at festivals and special occasions. The teachings were rehearsed and authenticated at the First Council, and were handed down from generation to generation accurately by means of these group recitations.

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. So much, then, as to the general influence of this religion in explanation of the statement often made, that the Chinese are Buddhists. Independently of this general conformity, however, there is a large proportion of the population professedly Buddhist.

The cultural context
