For example, puberty now typically begins during preadolescence , particularly in females. Thus, age provides only a rough marker of adolescence, and scholars have found it difficult to agree upon a precise definition of adolescence.

Storm and Stress was a phrase coined by psychologist G. Stanley Hall, to refer to the period of adolescence as a time of turmoil and difficulty. The concept of Storm and Stress is comprised of three key elements: conflict with parents and authority figures, mood disruptions, and risky behavior. Conflict with parents and other authority figures comes about as adolescents begin to question or even directly go against the wisdom of elders. Adolescents tend to be more emotionally volatile and experience more frequent mood swings as they undergo changes that come with puberty.

Meeting together over the past three years, we have engaged in many illuminating discussions about what works effectively with teens and young adults, and what does not. Our programs have thrived because more than talking we listen to the experts themselves—the youth. Finding out what they want, how they think programs should be designed, and what we can improve upon has been our ongoing focus. As we embarked upon this project, however, we knew that we needed to consult other experts in the field to substantiate and enhance what we knew from our experience. We reviewed developmental theories, sought to gain a better understanding of the brain, and explored the ways in which supporting youth in the arts could aid in their growth process.
For much of human history, the idea of adolescence being a distinct life stage was nonexistent. An abundance of research indicates that teens and young adults are experiencing increased levels of stress and depression. Survey respondents reported that during the school year, they had a stress level of 5. During the summer break, teens reported a slight decrease in stress levels — 4.

A dolescence has long been recognized as a period of heightened risk-taking and, accordingly, a stage that requires special oversight from adults. A common subject of social commentary in the United States is that young people today begin adolescence too early and leave it too late. This idea that adolescents undergo a protracted period of development is not unique to modern times, however. Stanley Hall was a pioneer in the scientific study of adolescence, defining it in as a time of storm and stress, although it was identified as a distinct phase of life as early as the fourth century BC. Hall's view that adolescence is a period of heightened "storm and stress" is reconsidered in light of contemporary research. The author provides a brief history of the storm-and-stress view and examines 3 key aspects of this view: conflict with parents, mood disruptions, and risk behavior. In all 3 areas, evidence supports a modified storm-and-stress view that takes into account individual differences and cultural variations.
