The action of the story is set in Nantucket in the s. Despite undoubted dissimilarities in the settings of the two stories, they both present a colourful account of the secret relationship between a womanizer and an attractive woman who are trapped in loveless marriages. As for Dmitri, his stay with his family in Moscow makes him aware of his true love to Anna.
The character notices how shallow his life without this genuine feeling was. The discovery of genuine love helps him to comprehend how worthless his previous adventures with females were. The protagonist depicts his mistress as a beautiful, intelligent woman with a melodious voice.
Joyce Carol Oates presents the theme of marital infidelity in a completely new light. Throughout the story, the protagonist remains in the state of confusion and indecisiveness. Her unstable feelings continually influence the relationship with her lover. Her emotions towards him vacillate between love and hatred. Besides, she is defined as a passive protagonist. What is more, because of the suffering and the sense of guilt their relationship entails, their love is not perceived as sinful but arouses compassion.
Even her lover is bewildered by her calmness and satisfaction. It seems that the love helped the heroine to discover her true self.
To sum up, the comparison of the point of view applied in the two short stories allows the reader to understand how the change of perspective influences the story. Her inability to free herself of the awareness of sin makes the reader imagine their love as burdensome.
Finally, both protagonists experience the transformation within the story. London: David Campbell, , pp. London: Basingstoke: Picador, , pp. Anna Dabek Author. Add to cart. At this point, the dog has been referred to as a pet dog, a little dog, and now, simply, the dog. In particular, this young woman piques the interest of Dmitri Dmitrich Gurov, a well-educated married man who has regularly been unfaithful to … Let us have a talk now, well think up something. The dog's role is the story is limited and primarily serves as a way for Gurov to use it to his own advantage in order to introduce himself to the lady. Every person in the group will be responsible for turning in a paper, and every response must include textual references for support. A forty-year-old man named Dmitri Gurov is intrigued by a young woman walking along the sea front of Yalta with her small Pomeranian dog. Dmitri dislikes his shrewish and intelligent wife and, as a result, has numerous love affairs. Although the protagonist disparages women and calls them "the lower race," he secretly acknowledges that he is more at ease in their company than in men's. One day, "the lady with the dog" sits down next to Dmitri to eat in the public gardens. The man pets her dog in order to strike up a conversation.
Anton Chekhov tells the story of Gurov a well-todo man from Moscow who is disillusioned by his unfulfilling marriage. During a vacation in Yalta, Gurov is acquainted with Anna, a young, upper-class lady who, as it turns out, is similarly disappointed with her love-life and husband. What starts out as a simple affair between Gurov and the Anna turns into a relationship which neither want to give up. Both eventually arrange to see each other regularly and discover, that they want to continue their affair despite being aware that this is not accepted by the society within which they live. Staying together is the only thing that gives them the feeling of being safe and happy. Joyce Carol Oates borrows this original plot and creates a new story which describes a similar issue from the viewpoint of the woman.
