A leading foreign policy thinker uses Chinese political theory to explain why some powers rise as others decline and what this means for the international order. While work in international relations has closely examined the decline of great powers, not much attention has been paid to the question of their rise. The upward trajectory of China is a particularly puzzling case. How has it grown increasingly important in the world arena while lagging behind the United States and its allies across certain sectors? Yan defines political leadership through the lens of morality, specifically the ability of a government to fulfill its domestic responsibility and maintain international strategic credibility.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. This book critically examines the argument that the Global South has risen in recent years, that its rise has intensified since the financial crisis, and that this in turn has hastened the decline of the West and the US in particular. Drawing on critical theories of international relations and development, Kiely puts the rise into context and shows how the factors that aided the rise of the South have now given way to a less favourable international context. Indeed, economic problems in China and other leading countries, falling commodity prices and capital outflows point us in the direction of identifying a new phase of the financial crisis: an emerging markets crisis. Kiely argues that this is a crisis which demonstrates the continued dependent position of the South in the context of the uneven and combined development of international capitalism.

The Great War now stands as the prime example of the folly of war, an exercise in futility that was terrible in its slaughter. Yet this did not mark the end of Great Power wars. The victors believed that Germany should be penalized for its role in starting the war but this created a new set of grievances that Hitler played upon. In addition, while the norm of self-determination was an attempt to address grievances before they led to violence, the breakup of the old continental empires after was accompanied by great violence. Something similar happened as a result of the irresistible processes of decolonization after The growth of civil wars is one reason why the Great War was not the war to end all wars.

The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers: Economic Change and Military Conflict from 1500 to 2000

The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers: Economic Change and Military Conflict from to , by Paul Kennedy , first published in , explores the politics and economics of the Great Powers from to and the reason for their decline. Kennedy argues that the strength of a Great Power can be properly measured only relative to other powers, and he provides a straightforward and persuasively argued thesis: Great Power ascendancy over the long term or in specific conflicts correlates strongly to available resources and economic durability; military overstretch and a concomitant relative decline are the consistent threats facing powers whose ambitions and security requirements are greater than their resource base can provide for. He concludes that declining countries can experience greater difficulties in balancing their preferences for guns, butter and investments. The "military conflict" referred to in the book's subtitle is therefore always examined in the context of "economic change. For that reason, how a Great Power's position steadily alters in peacetime, is as important to this study as how it fights in wartime.

Don't have an account? There are no laws in history. Realists, liberals, and others are both right and wrong. Although no one can be certain that military incidents may not happen, for the foreseeable future China and the United States are unlikely to favor major war. They have cooperated well for almost four decades now.
