Look Inside. Achieves a universality that is movingly personal. Relentlessly paced and filled with lethal surprises, Death and the Maiden is an inquest into the darker side of humanity—one in which everyone is implicated and justice itself comes to seem like a fragile, perhaps ambiguous invention. A writer for adults, Ariel Dorfman is an exile from the Pinochet regime in Chile and the child of holocaust refugees. He has written several plays about repression and dictatorship including Death and the Maiden filmed by Roman Polanski.

Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden is a moral thriller about a woman, Paulina, who believes that a stranger who comes to her home is the doctor who, under a military dictatorship, tortured and raped her many years before. The play's title is taken from a piece of music by Franz Schubert; Paulina loved the piece but grew to revile it when it was played repeatedly during her torture sessions. Dorfman began writing the play in the mids, when he was in exile from Chile, a country under the rule of the military dictator General Augusto Pinochet. It was not until Chile's return to democracy in that Dorfman returned to the play and "understood Reception of the play was positive, critics finding it both dramatically engaging as well as historically timely given the number of societies around the world facing painful legacies of repressive regimes.

Despite the significance of Donald Duck to the history of Latin American cultural criticism and to Dorfman's own trajectory as a writer, thus far, critical studies of Dorfman tend to gloss his essays, ignore his journalism, and focus solely on his literature, especially on his play La muerte y la doncella Death and the Maiden. While the attention to Death and the Maiden is certainly well founded, it is worth considering how these two works complement each other in Dorfman's career, given the apparent lack of a shared aesthetic between the playful cultural criticism of Donald Duck and the sparse language of Death and the Maiden. In fact, attending to Donald Duck and Dorfman's other nonfiction texts reveals the ways that he has worked across styles and genres on a series of central issues that form the core of his work.
Much of its music is quite dark, severe and rhythmic. Here we feature the decidedly rhythmic Scherzo 3rd movement from that quartet.

Paulina Salas is not unique in her suffering. Indeed, even for Dorfman, she is something to be used for a purpose — here, to convey the impacts of tyranny rather than face it. But where Paulina differs is in the opportunity that Dorfman lays for her.
