Many years ago, as an undergraduate studying English, I was obliged to take a paper in medieval literature. Although I reflected that English students at Oxford were having a harder time of it, being expected to read Anglo-Saxon poetry, I found much of the stuff - even some of the Chaucer - somewhat primitive. It was all, as far as I could see, violence, courtly manners, piety and not getting laid.

Following shortly upon the heels of his widely acclaimed translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , this Yorkshire poet has crafted an unabridged translation of the chivalric romance known as the Alliterative Morte Arthure.

Whereas his rendering of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight enriches the glittering hoard of excellent translations of that poem including one by J. He has elegantly managed the daunting task of producing a translation that revives an obsolescent poetic for a wide-ranging readership, including the Arthurian specialists of this journal.

What is perhaps most surprising about this translation is its highly alliterative quality. I say this is surprising because we might expect that an accomplished poet known for his down-to-earth registers might reduce, rather than increase, the amount of alliteration in a poem that is often degraded for its stylized and consonantal rhythms. Like much alliterative poetry of the late fourteenth century, the Alliterative Morte Arthure relies upon a regular metrical structure balanced on a caesura that divides each line into two halves of two accented syllables.

Many other moments could be highlighted here, but suffice it to say that Armitage does not merely translate this poem — he alliterates it. This dual-language format will allow this book to be used by students who have no previous experience with Middle English as well as those who seek guidance in their own navigations of the often challenging northern dialect.

Ho ho ho, green giant

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is the masterpiece of medieval alliterative poetry. The unknown fourteenth-century author a contemporary of Chaucer has imbued his work witn the heroic atmosphere of a saga, with the spirit of French romance and with a Christian consciousness. It is a poe:n in which the virtues of a knight, Sir Gawain, triumphant in almost insuperable ordeals, are celebrated to the glory of the House of Arthur. The impact made on the reader is both magical and human, full of drama and descriptive beauty. After the war, during which he was decorated, he entered the teaching profession and taught English in boys' schools for eleven years. He then trained teachers for ten years at Loughborough and Brighton. He has recently retired from the Open University, where, as a founder member in , he was Reader in Literature.

The author is unknown; the title was given centuries later. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folk motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse , each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel , [1] it draws on Welsh , Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important example of a chivalric romance, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess. It remains popular in modern English renderings from J. Tolkien , Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations.
