Blake completed all the 27 plates that compose the book in , printing most of the extant copies in that year. In the mids he produced three more copies; in and he worked on other two richly illuminated versions. Blakean philologist Joseph Viscomi has proved that plates had been cut out from the same piece of copper and were probably produced as a separate anti-Swedenborgian pamphlet before he began working on the rest of the book. Robert W. The satirical The Marriage of Heaven and Hell has long been recognised as a key work in William Blake's literary production. Yet the precise nature of his theological dispute with the mystic philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg in this text has never been fully explained. Although the title page is undated, the twenty-seven plates of Marriage were probably created in , as is indicated in ink on this plate of a printing. The date highlights Blake's claim that at age thirty-three he represented a "new heaven" of artistic creativity. His third illuminated book, Marriage was his first created in Hercules Buildings in Lambeth. This copy, which was once owned by Thomas Butts, Blake's great patron, was "color printed" by applying the pigments for the background directly to the shallow-etched printing plate.
