The first thing that struck me about this book when I read it as an undergraduate was the personable charm of the narrator. Embarking on a topic which could hardly be broader or grander: the study of how literature has described the world; he starts with his own country, with his own city. Certain books are held dear because they are also psychic landmarks revealing where and how they helped us come into consciousness. Inevitably, our perception of the world continues to be informed by such texts long after the precise details of their contents have been forgotten. Raymond Williams was born in in the Welsh border village of Pandy, and was educated at the village school, at Abergavenny Grammar School, and at Trinity College, Cambridge.

The Country and the City

The Country and the City is a book of cultural analysis by Raymond Williams which was first published in Coming from the Welsh border, a village in the Black Mountains , Raymond Williams found that the images of rural life taught at the University of Cambridge did not match what he had seen. As an academic at Cambridge, he studied and examined the contradiction, along with the contrasting idea of the city, which in the United Kingdom has never been separate from the countryside. Rural life without cities had existed in other parts of the world, but not for a very long time in Britain. Chapter 2, A Problem of Perspective , examines the idea that an ancient continuous rural life has recently ended.

A great mix of literary criticism - his readings of G. Eliot and Dickens are particularly impressive - history and political agitation. Williams starts with a discussion of the pastoral mode, which is An exceptional history of power, society, money and aesthetics. Fascinating and engaging. The Country and the City.

A positive judgment needs to be communicated at the outset, since the disagreements and irritations which Raymond Williams's argument inevitably and properly provokes are always threatening to divert attention from the originality of his approach and the brilliance of so many of his individual insights. The scope of the book is enormous - no less than the cultural interrelations of country and city through four centuries of English experience as they are manifested in literature and social commentary, together with a continuing critique of the resultant myths, assumptions, and conventions. Yet this account conveys the wrong impression if it suggests a dryly academic study.

Nothing embodied these changes as much as the development of Rangoon as a major imperial port city.
