In the list of the networking devices, NIC stands on the first place. Without this device, networking cannot be done. NIC allows a networking device to communicate with the other networking device. In this first post of the 3-article series, we will start by exploring the functions of endpoints and servers. Then the section about LAN switches will follow focusing on the difference between Layer 2 and Layer 3 switch operation. The purpose of the infrastructure that the network devices create is to connect endpoints, such as computers, laptops, mobile and IP phones, and servers. A typical endpoint usually runs client applications, for example, a web browser and mail client that interact with the users. These network-enabled applications use services provided by network protocol stacks, drivers, and hardware components. Out of all network components, endpoints have the most obvious role — they generate useful network payloads, such as digitized voice or Excel spreadsheets that are being transmitted over the network.

In this lesson, we are going to explore the packet delivery process, from the routing perspective. We will see how one of the main functions of routing is to determine the optimal path across a routed network for IP packets. We will dive deep into certain components like routing tables and describe the different methods to populate routing tables, for example, static and dynamic routing. For dynamic routing, will list the characteristics of routing protocols and classify them into distance, vector, and link state. We know that routers implement layer 3 or network layer functions. Their main job is to forward packets based upon a routing table. When doing so, they also provide traffic segmentation, multiple broadcast domains, and define network layer addressing subnets and networks.
A wide range of devices are used in modern networking. MAC addresses are the means by which systems communicate at a base level. As a network administrator, you will need to understand the purpose, function, and expression of MAC addresses. These network-enabled applications use services provided by network protocol stacks, drivers, and hardware components. And their function is to interact with a user, follow specific standards and protocols, so the transmitted data can be decoded on the receiving side of the connection.

Computer network components are the major parts which are needed to install the software. Some important network components are NIC , switch , cable , hub , router , and modem. Depending on the type of network that we need to install, some network components can also be removed.
There are three primary components to understanding networks: 1. Physical Connections; 2. Network Operating System; and 3. Application Component. The physical components are the network topology and network connecting devices, which include network interface cards NIC , cabling, connections, and all other hardware to connect the computers.
Network devices, or networking hardware, are physical devices that are required for communication and interaction between hardware on a computer network. Hubs connect multiple computer networking devices together. A hub also acts as a repeater in that it amplifies signals that deteriorate after traveling long distances over connecting cables.

We are going to start, slowly but surely, building a theoretical network in our minds. In order to do this, we are going to start from the beginning; recognizing all the components of a modern network as well as some not so modern devices. Sometimes it is also called host computer, servers are powerful computer that store data or application and connect to resources that are shared by the user of a network.
