Discipline is the deliberate, or lack of, action to regulate behaviour. It is the practice of frank and strict adherence to legislation and guidelines, and cultural standards and values; the ability to control oneself or other people, even in challenging circumstances.
Freedom and Discipline are powerful words. They can elicit emotional reactions. They have personal and historical significance to individuals and nations. Sometimes, one of these qualities is viewed as ALL of Montessori.

It also includes the freedom of movement and the freedom from fear. Freedom to move throughout the classroom as needed and freedom from the fear of correction, of reprisals.
There is a spontaneous cooperation between freedom and discipline. A harmony of the two, freedom and discipline, that comes from the order of the classroom, in the way items are placed on shelves to the rules of the classroom environment. Order is the basis necessary for this harmony. The prepared environment of the classroom is the tool that puts order in the child's everyday life. Because of this Prepared Environment, and the child's choices and actions, there begins the development of the child's inner will.
The coordination of concentration and prolonged attention given to the activities that the child has chosen, repeated as often as the child has an interest in the work, begins the development of independence and will. The Montessori classroom is very much different.
The discipline of the Montessori classroom is built on "self discipline". That is when the child takes control of his own actions. Independence and the will of the child are developed with self discipline as the rule. But in observing the child we have seen that they can be the two sides of the same coin.
Obedience;Maria Montessori believed that there are three levels of obedience. The first is the level at which the child may or may not be able to obey. This is because the child is not able to comply due to physical inabilities resulting for the age of the child or the child's development.
The second level is that level at which the child is always able to comply with the request given. There are no obstacles in the way that could restrict the child from obeying the request of the teacher or other person. At this level self-discipline and the will of the child come into play, affecting the child's behavior and obedience. This is the level that is expected in today's educational systems.
The teacher just wants the children to do as she wishes, to be obeyed. But in the Montessori classroom the child goes to a third level of obedience. The child, "when allowed to develop in accordance with the laws of his nature, goes much further than this; further than we should ever have expected.
At this third level the child is filled with enthusiasm, waiting for the next request to be fulfilled. Anxious to comply and feeling joy in doing what has been requested. Related Papers.

It is very important to relax because our brain needs to detox and rest in order to function with optimal capacity. By disciplining, one can learn to apportion time to various activities, including rest.
The Montessori Method is characterized by providing a prepared environment: tidy, pleasing in appearance, simple and real, where each element exists for a reason in order to help in the development of the child. A Montessori classroom integrates children of mixed ages that are grouped in periods of 3 years. This promotes socialization, respect and solidarity among them naturally.
