Socializing and networking was transformed in the technological era by the introduction of social networking sites SNSs. These online sites contain an abundance of information about individual preferences, interests, types, and frequency of social interactions, etc. However, scientific studies that have utilized SNS activity data to aid our understanding of mental health disorders are scarce.

Social media has become a prominent fixture in the lives of many individuals facing the challenges of mental illness. Social media refers broadly to web and mobile platforms that allow individuals to connect with others within a virtual network such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, or LinkedIn , where they can share, co-create, or exchange various forms of digital content, including information, messages, photos, or videos Ahmed et al. Other exploratory studies have found that many of these individuals with mental illness appear to turn to social media to share their personal experiences, seek information about their mental health and treatment options, and give and receive support from others facing similar mental health challenges Bucci et al. Across the USA and globally, very few people living with mental illness have access to adequate mental health services Patel et al. The wide reach and near ubiquitous use of social media platforms may afford novel opportunities to address these shortfalls in existing mental health care, by enhancing the quality, availability, and reach of services. Recent studies have explored patterns of social media use, impact of social media use on mental health and wellbeing, and the potential to leverage the popularity and interactive features of social media to enhance the delivery of interventions. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the risks and potential harms of social media for mental health Orben and Przybylski and how best to weigh these concerns against potential benefits.
What are the effects of social media on mental health and how could making social comparisons on social media contribute to mental health problems? Social media has become a mainstay of popular culture, particularly among young people, but our understanding of its effects on mental health is at an early stage. This article looks at the evidence linking social media with mental health problems and how the increased opportunity to make social comparisons on social media could be an important contributor. Relevant theories are discussed and suggestions made for nursing practice. Citation: Warrender D, Milne R How use of social media and social comparison affect mental health.

Using a novel approach to consider the available literature and research, this book focuses on the psychology of social media based on the assumption that the experience of being in a social media has an impact on both our identity and social relationships. This online self is presented in different ways, with diverse goals and aims in order to engage in different social media activities and to achieve desired outcomes. Whilst this may not be a real physical presence, that physicality is becoming increasingly replicated through photos, video, and ever-evolving ways of defining and describing the self online. Moreover, individuals are using both PC-based and mobile-based social media as well as increasingly making use of photo and video editing tools to carefully craft and manipulate their online self. This book therefore explores current debates in Cyberpsychology, drawing on the most up-to-date theories and research to explore four main aspects of the social media experience communication, identity, presence and relationships. In doing so, it considers the interplay of different areas of psychological research with current technological and security insight into how individuals create, manipulate and maintain their online identity and relationships.

During the past decade, online social networking has caused profound changes in the way people communicate and interact. It is unclear, however, whether some of these changes may affect certain normal aspects of human behavior and cause psychiatric disorders. Several studies have indicated that the prolonged use of social networking sites SNS , such as Facebook, may be related to signs and symptoms of depression. In addition, some authors have indicated that certain SNS activities might be associated with low self-esteem, especially in children and adolescents.
