I loved it. And the closing credits shot of the amusement park always struck an oddly melancholic chord with me, maybe because, at the end, it was a reminder that those kids were still far from home. Years later, it was adapted into a radio play format for one of the DVD releases.
One of the most acclaimed animated series of the s was Dungeons and Dragons, about a group of young people who go on a Dungeons and Dragons amusement park ride They then fight against the evil Venger and other bad guys that they happen to come across along the way Now, Dungeons and Dragons was a controversial show for the time period, because the writing was so advanced for the era that the tone of the show was a good deal darker than other, similar shows. This does not mean that it was really DARK, per se, but contextually, it definitely was. This was a show where it really did seem like people could theoretically die, ya know? Some of the top animated writers of the s.
It was a good show, and I still have fond memories of writing for it a fairly rare and wondrous event, even when you've written as much animation as I have. This is a fairly common practice today, but it was pretty much unheard-of back then, particularly in animation. It was decided that the episode Titled Requiem -- I don't remember if that was Karl's title or mine, but it doesn't really fit the script as it finally came to be written. I wanted to call it Redemption , but CBS felt that that title gave too much away should end on a note that was both ambiguous and triumphant to cover all bets, because at the time we were doing the script we didn't know if the show would be renewed for a fourth season or not. According to Gary Gygax, the series' co-creator, the plan was for Requiem to be used as a springboard for a new approach to the show, one in which the kids would be more self-reliant and not dependent on their weapons. I was disappointed, but scarcely surprised -- orphaned TV scripts are hardly a rarity, and one either learns to deal with the disappointment or find another line of work.
A co-production of and TSR, the show originally ran from through for three on for a total of twenty-seven episodes. The Japanese company did the animation for this series. The show focused on a group of six friends who are transported into the titular realm and followed their adventures as they tried to find a way home with the help of their guide 'Dungeon Master'. A final un-produced episode would have served as a conclusion as well as a re-imagining had the series been picked up for a fourth season. However, the show was cancelled before the episode was made. The script can be found from various sources online and was performed as an as a special feature for the DVD edition of the series. Upon arriving in the realm they meet Dungeon Master named for the referee in the role-playing game who gives each child a magical item.
The Japanese company Toei Animation did the animation for the series. The show focused on a group of six friends who are transported into the titular realm and followed their adventures as they tried to find a way home with the help of their guide the Dungeon Master. A final unproduced episode would have served as both a conclusion to the story as well as a re-imagining of the show had the series been picked up for a fourth season; however, the show was cancelled before the episode was made. The script has since been published online and was performed as an audio drama as a special feature for the BCI Eclipse DVD edition of the series. In , a fan-made animation of the finale using new and existing animation from the show and audio from the audio drama was uploaded to YouTube.
This is a project I've been wanting to do for awhile now. For any kid of the 80s, they remember the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. Like most 80s.
The Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon: 30 Years Old Today
It ran for three seasons with 27 episodes through It was centered around six kids ranging from 8 to 15 years old who had passed through a magical portal on a carnival ride only to discover themselves transported to a fantasy world with… well, dungeons and dragons along with other monsters from the role-playing game. Within the show, this world was known as The Realm. No sooner had they arrived then they immediately encountered their primary adversaries through the series, the demonic Venger and the Queen of Evil Dragons, the multi-headed Tiamat.
Though the first season rambled a bit, there was a definite progression of character development and storyline, and even the occasional moral. The episodes I remembered were nostalgically appreciated, and the handful I'd never seen before mostly the third season were undiscovered treasures. The final panel shows our six young warriors, only not so young: they are now grown, haggard, and defeated.

Can you remember the names of the eight protagonists? Do you remember if the children ever made it home?
