Project-based Learning and Multimedia

Naturally, I was interested in investigating project-based learning PBL for a paper in an independent study course. I discovered that PBL is a pedagogical approach that focuses on learning through experiential learning activities that moves beyond traditional rote memorization. There is evidence that suggests that PBL is an effective method for teaching students complex processes and procedures relating to planning, communication, and problem solving, while increasing student engagement and academic achievement Thomas, , p. Krajcik and Blumenfeld , p. As I was looking at potentially using elements of these models, there was a problem.

Entering Mrs. Baxter's classroom, you first notice that every child is completely engrossed. Second, you notice the cacophony of voices, rising and falling in intense, animated discussions among small groups of 3rd graders. You look for the teacher—she isn't conveniently located at the front of the room. Finally, you see her down among a group of students.

Problem-based learning PBL provides real-world, purposeful interactions to help graduate and undergraduate students learn how to work with and learn from a diverse group of people laterally and horizontally within a learning community. At the same time, information technology in the 21 century provides the opportunity to integrate learner support into PBL learning environments. PBL and technology provide the opportunity for communities to grow and learn together.

Full Paper PDF. The study involved 45 tenth-grade students at a public high school in Bangkok, Thailand. All of the 45 students also reported positive perceptions toward the instruction. They reflected that the instruction was advantageous and practical since it facilitated their vocabulary learning, increased their self-confidence and improved their speaking skills. It also created a pleasant learning atmosphere, provided the students with more opportunities to participate in classroom activities, and encouraged the students to learn with technology. The result of this study was the final product in the form of textbook and multimedia-based media to teach English for students in elementary.

What is PBL?

One very holistic approach that has emerged to put constructivism into action is Project-Based Learning PBL which also infuses technology into learning activities in a very natural way. Children make predictions, and investigate through observation, interviews, fieldwork and gathering information from a variety of sources. In the process of gathering information, findings are recorded and shared in an collaborative usually public way, with all students accepting responsibility for their part in the discovery process. To me, PBL exemplifies a holistic, bricolage approach since it involves knowing well your students and their community and using a wide variety of available resources people, technology, knowledge, observations to explore personally relevant topics deeply.

The old-school model of passively learning facts and reciting them out of context is no longer sufficient to prepare students to survive in today's world. Solving highly complex problems requires that students have both fundamental skills reading, writing, and math and 21st century skills teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, time management, information synthesizing, utilizing high tech tools. With this combination of skills, students become directors and managers of their learning process, guided and mentored by a skilled teacher. A number of excellent works published in the last few decades promote 21st century skills.

Project Based Learning PBL is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. Students work on a project over an extended period of time — from a week up to a semester — that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question.

By project-based learning, we mean a teaching method in which students acquire new knowledge and skills in the course of designing, planning, and producing.

Project-based learning helped learners realize that they could help someone else. The most obvious outcomes of this project were learners.
