Thanks for telling us about the problem. Return to Book Page. Preview — Zealot by Reza Aslan. From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Within decades after his shameful death, his followers would call him God. Scores of Jewish prophets, preachers, and would-be messiahs wandered through the Holy Land, bearing messages from God.
This was the age of zealotry—a fervent nationalism that made resistance to the Roman occupation a sacred duty incumbent on all Jews. And few figures better exemplified this principle than the charismatic Galilean who defied both the imperial authorities and their allies in the Jewish religious hierarchy. Aslan explores the reasons why the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary.
And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity. The result is a thought-provoking, elegantly written biography with the pulse of a fast-paced novel: a singularly brilliant portrait of a man, a time, and the birth of a religion.

I am only halfway through the book, so it may be answered later in my reading, but so far there has been a lot of talk of men having a great number of followers that also claimed to be the messiah.
In Part 2 Aslan claims there were a many men wondering around performing "miracles" My question is, if at this same time of civil upheaval, why was it Jesus that has stood the test of time over others claiming the same?

It took a prominent Roman who converted to the faith and started preaching it outside of Judea to fellow Romans and other Jews.
On the list of the most important christian figures the Catholic church itself rates Paul the Apostle first! He was instrumental in establishing a foothold of the new faith in the Empire. There it competed with a lot of "new" Eastern religions that promised everlasting afterlife and eternal punishment for wrongdoers such as Mithraism being the most popular at the time.
Nero's prosecutions actually helped a lot with promoting the Christian faith. It was widely believed by the populace that he caused that fire. To shift the blame from himself he accused the Christians and began a campaign of bloody prosecutions which ended up endearing the young religion and it's courageous adherents to the populace. The last person to cement Christianity's standing in Europe was Constantine the Great who lifted the faith up and decriminalized it.
Afterward with one exception all future Emperors and their family were Christian. That meant that if you wanted to move up in the vast Imperial bureaucracy it was very beneficial to be Christian. It was very quickly afterward in the span of a century that Christianity became the dominant religion and the old faiths were in turn criminalized.
How does our present image of Jesus of Nazareth differ from the historical Jesus portrayed in this book? It is notable that the apostles who actually knew and followed Jesus during his ministry vehemently condemned Paul and his teachings about Jesus.
This was the Jewish expectation of anybody claiming to be the Messiah. Once the Romans razed Judea and destroyed the Temple, which occurred before some of the canonised Gospels were written, this view of Jesus became highly inconvenient. It was better for the early Christians if Jesus could be painted as somebody who was not a political opponent of Rome; to do otherwise was to invite persecution. So the Jesus message evolved into a Kingdom not of this world, and a man who did not preach violence or Jewish exclusivity, and did not oppose Rome.

A friend of mine let me borrow it so that I could come to your time and talk with you. See, I read this book about you and I decided to stop by here because there's some stuff we need to get straig "Hello there! See, I read this book about you and I decided to stop by here because there's some stuff we need to get straight. It came at a hefty price.
I'm just a working class Joe. What could possibly be so interesting about me that could result in an entire book? One big book, called the bible, has you as it's central character, which has made you a pretty big deal. It's called Christianity. I don't understand. See, we started keeping track of the years by using your miraculous birth as a starting point. What was so miraculous about my birth? Don't ask me how THAT happened exactly, but that's the story many believe as literal, even though it was entirely made up to make you fit the description of the Messiah according to Jewish prophecy.
Look, see the tall guy with the long hair and wearing sandals over by the camel? I know about the Messiah that your talking about, many other guys have been 'The Messiah' with many disciples of their own.
Can't swing a sheep around here without hitting a Messiah. Whether or not we are 'The Messiah', we all want the same damn thing Those bastards have occupied us for long enough!! Good for you! You are quite the political revolutionary. In the bible, you are portrayed as a peace loving, hippie type. Man, I can't stand those rich Roman bastards, taking everything for themselves and leaving so little for my people. I like peace and all, but that's not going get these Roman bastards the hell out of here.
Uh, what's a hippie? I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but, the Romans are going to arrest you for that stunt. Your Governor, Pontius Pilate, is out to get you. I'm sure that the murderous jerk will crucify me along side the rest of the Messiahs. When the Romans adopt Christianity as their Religion they make Pilate a sympathetic character who calls for you to be saved from the cross. They make it appear as if your fellow Jews are the ones who call for your death instead. That's just nuts!!
Why would my people want me to die? No one will ever believe that Some Christians believe the Bible is THE word of God and not a book of parables, this resulted in a lot of ugly antisemitism over the years. Many were persecuted and killed because it was believed that it was they who killed you. Aslan obviously knows what he's talking about, as he pointed out in that unfortunate interview on Fox, he has a few degrees on the subject of religion.
I think anyone would find this book fascinating. I did.
Jesus of Nazareth the Story of His Life
An interesting intellectual and spiritual experience is to read The Life of Jesus History of early Christianity; 1 Ernest Renan excellent free edition and just after, Zealot Reza Aslan, which attacks the very origins of Christianity: Jesus, the Apostles, St. Paul, and the birth of the Church made the career we know. Aslan has a theory: Jesus was a political and social revolution, against the priests of the Temple exploiters and colonization of Rome. The ruling class of his time and the Romans agreed to eliminate it. But he has risen from the Greek Jews after the destruction of the Temple and the Christian religion was born, Jesus was never intended. The characters are strong, the situations are clear, the unfolding of the story is easy to follow.
How Old Is the Bible? Peace Hacks. It is a historical account of the life of Jesus and analyzes the various religious perspectives on Jesus as well as the creation of Christianity. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity. Introduction It is a miracle that we know anything at all about the man called Jesus of Nazareth. Stuart Kelly likens the argument to a West End musical who defanged the zealot. R eza Aslan s Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth resurrects the theory that Jesus ministry and death are best explained against the background of Jewish zealot movementsZealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that calls into question everything we thought we knew about Jesus of Nazareth.

Historical Context , Historical Jesus. One of the things variously amusing and annoying is the re-appearance of ideas and claims in my own area of expertise as if something new, something suppressed e. Aslan a PhD in Sociology of Religion, and with his own marketing firm, and with a university connection in creative writing, but no training or demonstrated expertise in ancient Judaism, early Christianity, Roman history, or any of the subjects relevant to the book in question pushes in sensationalist prose the supposedly shocking idea that Jesus was actually a political revolutionary who advocated an armed struggle against Roman occupation of his homeland. Apparently, since a recent Fox TV News interview, sales of the book have gone through the roof and with that Aslan has got at least one of his main objectives, perhaps his principal one, there being no such thing as bad publicity when you want to market books, movies, etc.
