Ultrafiltrate of plasma Similar concentration of plasma Nutrition for vascular deficient cartilage Hyaluronic acid. Crystal identification To evaluate arthritis, microscopic examination of synovial fluid for the presence of crystals is an important diagnostic test. Crystal formation is caused by metabolic disorders and decreased renal excretion that produce elevated blood levels of crystallizing chemicals, degeneration of cartilage and bone, and injection of medications, such as corticosteroids into a joint. Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate -these crystals appear as rhomboids, rods, or rectangles m in length -weakly birefringent with positive elongation -too small to polarize the light, making them difficult to detect without phase-contrast microscopy. Calcium oxalate to m bipyramidal octahedral envelopes with variable birefringence and positive elongation -seen in arthropathy associated with chronic renal dialysis and primary oxalosis, a rare inborn error of metabolism - monohydrate form is birefringent but nondescript in shape.
Synovial fluid SF laboratory testing is an important part of a diagnostic evaluation of patients with joint diseases. Synovial fluid laboratory testing is rarely performed in Croatian medical biochemistry laboratories. Consequently, procedures for SF laboratory testing are poorly harmonized. This document is the second in the series of recommendations prepared by the members of the Working group for extravascular body fluid samples of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine. It addresses preanalytical, analytical, and postanalytical issues and the clinical significance of tests used in SF laboratory testing with the aim of improving the value of SF laboratory testing in the diagnosis of joint diseases and assisting in the achievement of national harmonization. It is intended for laboratory professionals and all medical personnel involved in synovial fluid collection and testing. Chronic rheumatic conditions comprise more than different diseases including joint disease with an often progressive and generally painful nature.

Basically, body fluid is all types of liquid excreted and secreted from the human body. These fluids have their own important roles in maintaining the body functions. The examples of body fluids are:. In the biochemistry laboratory, most routine samples that are collected for laboratory testing are blood and urine samples.
