Nine Lessons and Carols
The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a service of Scripture and song that dates to the late 19th century. In this service, we listen to nine Scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News. Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson's message and a brief prayer. Though sin drew us away from God, he never stopped loving us. The prophets told of the coming of a Messiah who would initiate a reign of justice and peace.

Festival of Lessons and Carols
Every year more North American congregations are discovering the beauty of a traditional English service called, very simply, "Nine Lessons and Carols. But the content of those readings and the traditional way of conducting the service have become very meaningful to many congregations. Some of those traditions and the basic outline of the serivce are offered below. The service outline provided on these pages is taken from the back of Carolsfor Choirs, volume 1, published by Oxford University Press. This volume provides not only the complete lessons— and—carols service but also fifty carols beautifully arranged for choir and congregation. Although the cost of the book would use up much of most choir budgets, the number of songs and their timeless character guarantee that the book will be used for years. Another form of the service, containing additional prayers, is published in Prayers for the Christian Year, 2nd edition, Church of Scotland, produced in by Oxford University Press.

The story of the fall of humanity , the promise of the Messiah , and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings or lessons from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols , hymns and choir anthems. Up to the late 19th century, the singing of Christmas carols was normally performed by singers visiting people's houses, and carols — generally considered to be secular in content — had been excluded from Christian worship. In the Victorian era , the rising popularity of hymnody encouraged church musicians to introduce carols into worship. At around this time, the composer and organist John Stainer was compiling a collection, Christmas Carols New and Old , and during Christmas he introduced carols into the service of Choral Evensong at St Paul's Cathedral in London. The Choir of the Cathedral will sing a number of carols in the Cathedral on Christmas Eve, the service commencing at 10pm. We understand that this is at the wish of many of the leading parishioners and others. A like service has been instituted in other cathedral and large towns, and has been much appreciated.
A. C. Benson recalled: 'My father arranged from ancient sources a little service for Christmas Eve – nine carols and nine tiny lessons, which were read by various.
'A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols'
Christmas Eve at King's College, Cambridge, usually follows the same routine. There's a morning sound check, a lunch break, and then once the choirs are lined up to start, a red signal light flashes. One boy steps forward, unaccompanied, singing the perennial opening tune, "Once in Royal David's City. For many listeners, this is the moment Christmas begins.
The resources are gathered from a variety of sources and, while assembled mainly for The Anglican Church of St Thomas the Apostle, Kefalas , on the island of Crete in Greece, others may find them useful. This coming Sunday at am we can meet online only, in accordance with the government restrictions.
