This article discusses the presses, auxiliary equipment, and dies used in the blanking and piercing of commonly used magnetically soft materials, namely, low-carbon electrical steels and oriented and nonoriented silicon electrical steels. It describes the effect of stock thickness and work metal composition and condition on blanking and piercing.
Is There a Difference Between Blanking & Punching?
Blanking and piercing are shearing processes in which a punch and die are used to produce parts from coil or sheet stock. Blanking produces the outside features of the component, while piercing produces internal holes or shapes. The web is created after multiple components have been produced and is considered scrap material. The "slugs" produced by piercing internal features are also considered scrap. The terms "piercing" and "punching" can be used interchangeably.

The main difference between the two processes lies in the end product produced. On the other hand, in punching operations, the material removed is discarded, and the final product is the remaining material which then undergoes further processing. Another difference between the two processes is how manufacturers approach processing the initial sheet material. In a punching operation, they typically remove the smallest amount of material necessary from the original workpiece to minimize material waste. In contrast, blanking operations are most efficient when the maximum amount of material is removed from the workpiece.

Piercing, punching and blanking are three common machining processes that are used to manipulate raw metal, such as sheet metal. All three processes require the use of a machine, which in some way deforms or alters the physical properties of the raw metal. While similar, though, piercing, punching and blanking have different functions. Piercing is a shearing process in which raw metal is pierced with a machining tool, resulting in the creation of a circular or other shaped hole. As the raw metal is pierced, the metal from the newly created hole is considered scrap.
